The one and only safety car of the race was brought out after a collision between Daniel Ricciardo and Carlos Sainz on lap 1. Ricciardo finished 18th while Sainz retired. The other retirement was Fernando Alonso who had a damaged car after contact with Mick Schumacher on lap 1. There was more heartbreak for Ferrari as the championship leader Charles Leclerc spun on lap 55 and was only able to finish P6. Damage limitation for Mercedes saw George Russell finishing P4 with Valtteri Bottas behind him.

There were 3 retirements: Kevin Magnussen with a water leak issue, Mick Schumacher lucky to escape a massive crash on lap 27 and Alexander Albon retired from last place towards the end. Only 64/78 laps were completed as the 2 hour period in which the race must be completed ran out due to the weather and red flags but there was enough distance covered to award full points. Yuki Tsunoda had a very unusual incident where half of his rear wing snapped but just about stayed attached. He was shown the black flag with an orange circle and was told to retire but his mechanics fixed it with tape in the pits which the FIA were seemingly fine with and he carried on to finish the race.

Well that was interesting wasn't it? There was rain at the start of the race, and after a first lap full of incidents, it was red-flagged.
