There are three stages to qualifying - Q1, Q2 and Q3. Q1 lasts for 18 minutes, Q2 lasts 15 and Q3 lasts 12. After both Q1 and Q2, the slowest five drivers are 'knocked out' of qualifying. they can no longer compete and their starting position is set. This leaves the fastest 10 cars to battle out for the top grid spots.
The term 'pole position' is given to the person that starts the race in first.
The starting order can change after qualifying is completed if a driver receives a penalty. These penalties may be known beforehand, for example, if a driver uses more components than have been allocated for a season. Penalties can also be given for impeding a driver during qualifying. These are usually 3 places but can be more.
If it is not a sprint race weekend, Qualifying takes place on Saturdays. The race always takes place on a Sunday
