What is a sprint race and how do they work?

The sprint race is a shorter version of the race, and has its own qualifying session. From 2023, the sprint race is a completely separate event from the rest of the weekend. The results of the sprint don't have any effect on the main race, unlike last year.

Qualifying for the sprint race is called the Sprint Shootout, and is shorter than the qualifying for the main race. SQ1 (Sprint Qualifying 1) lasts for 12 minutes and then the slowest five cars are out and their order cannot change. SQ2 lasts for 10 minutes and again the slowest five drop out. SQ3 contains the fastest 10 drivers and lasts for 8 minutes. Sprint qualifying is much shorter than qualifying for the main race and can be much harder.

Mandated tire allocation is in place for the sprint qualifying, providing that it is dry. A fresh, unused set of medium tires must be used in SQ1, more fresh mediums in SQ2 and fresh softs in SQ3.

The actual sprint race is 100km long, so the number of laps varies from track to track.
